Source: Giants Have No Interest in Leinart
Despite reports from ESPN that the Giants, Bills and Raiders were interested in trading for faltering Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, sources say that all three teams deny wanting to sign the former USC star.
Leinart has seen his star drop dramatically the last couple years as he has been unable to secure the starting job in Arizona, where he was beaten out first by greybearded Kurt Warner and now, inexplicably, by journeyman Derek Anderson.
If he’s not careful, Leinart will be known best for pictures taken of him in a hot tub with coeds instead of his gridiron accomplishments.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that that the Giants have no interest in Leinart.
The Giants especially have no interest in Leinart under his current contract, which pays him more than $10 million the next two seasons. It's possible that the Giants could become interested if Leinart were willing to take less money, but considering that Leinart doesn't want to be a backup, it's hard to see why he'd agree to take less money as part of a trade to the Giants, where he has no chance of beating out Eli Manning for the starting job.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports tweeted Wednesday that the Giants aren't interested in Leinart and want a veteran quarterback who is content with being Eli Manning's backup.
Agent for Plaxico Burress: Quick Return to NFL Unlikely
The lawyer for former New York Giants wide receiver PlaxicoBurress says no one should expect his client to be back in the NFL anytime soon – despite recent reports that he could be back with the Giants in a few weeks.
In Thursday’s New York Daily News, lawyer Peter Frankel is quoted as saying: "There's a very wide range of possible outcomes here, and I do not want to get too ahead of myself. I don't see [a return to football] happening in the short term. He still has a year left on his sentence, so this is still completely up to the discretion of the Department of Corrections and what they want to do."
Frankel added that Burress does want to return to the NFL right away once he's out of prison, and all indications are that Burress, who turns 33 next week, won't be available until 2011, anyway.
While recent reports had Burress eligible to get out of jail in two or three weeks, the Daily Newshas reported that Burress is still waiting to hear back on his second application for work release that he put in about a month ago.
The paper notes that the application won't even be voted on until a week or two from now.
"To say he'll be out in two to three weeks is certainly premature," Frankel said. “That was somebody going to visit him, and saying he was hopeful he might be moved in two to three weeks, and suddenly that turned into 'He'll be out in two to three weeks.'"
The earliest possible full release date for Burress is June 6 of next year, the paper reports.Burress applied for work release last November, only to have it turned down.
