<intro>
After six years with the Indianapolis Colts backing up Peyton Manning, quarterback Jim Sorgi will now get a shot to do the same thing for Peyton’s brother Eli.

The New York Giants announced on Tuesday that they have signed quarterback Jim Sorgi from the Colts to a one-year contract. Actual terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Sorgi will compete with second-year man Rhett Bomar for the privilege to be the Giants’ backup quarterback behind Eli Manning.

He has appeared in 16 NFL games, completing 99 of 156 pass attempts for 929 yards, with six touchdowns and one interception. He played in only one game last season, and he was placed on injured reserve with shoulder tendonitis in December.

On Monday, Sorgi worked out for the Giants and said that his shoulder felt fine. The 6-foot-5, 196-pound quarterback was drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL draft by the Colts.

The move leaves the Colts with Curtis Painter out of Purdue as the only other quarterback besides Peyton Manning on the roster. Painter appeared in two games as a rookie last season and was 8-28 for 83 yards and 2 interceptions passing and 3 attempts for 4 yards rushing. He was active in games 9-14, but did not play. He was inactive as the 3rd QB, behind Manning and Sorgi for the first eight games.

</intro>

    <intro>
Antrel Rolle, a Pro Bowler in 2009 with the Arizona Cardinals, signed one of the biggest contracts for a safety in NFL history on Friday to play for the New York Giants.

Rolle, 27, reportedly signed a five-year contract for approximately $37 million, with $15 million guaranteed.

He had been released by the Cardinals earlier in the week and became a free agent.

"I'm ecstatic," Rolle said. "Words can't really express how I feel now. I had five great years with the Cardinals organization. But I felt it was time for a change. The Giants are a first-class organization all the way. There are great opportunities for me, and I am excited to be working with the players I'll be working with. I think the sky's going to be the limit as to what we can do.

"I'm extremely excited for the opportunity, and I feel truly blessed. They have the confidence I can come in and be the player that they expect me to be, and I will live up to everything they expect and go beyond."

Rolle, 6-0, 208 pounds, spent his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, who released him on Thursday. The eighth overall selection of the 2005 NFL Draft, Rolle has been an outstanding all-around safety the last two years after playing his first three seasons at cornerback.

"Antrel is a young, ascending veteran player, and he is an outstanding person who will bring leadership, versatility and more big play ability to our secondary," general manager Jerry Reese said.

Rolle visited the Timex Performance Center in East Rutherford, N.J., on Friday and met with Reese, head coach Tom Coughlin and the defensive coaches.

Rolle has played in 68 regular season games with 59 starts. His career totals include 337 tackles (296 solo), 12 interceptions (including four he has returned for touchdowns; three in 2007), 36 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and 1.5 sacks. In 2009, Rolle started all 15 games in which he played and was credited with 72 tackles (61 solo). He also intercepted four passes, the second-highest total of his career. One of those was on an Eli Manning pass with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter on Oct. 25, sealing the Cardinals' 24-17 victory over the Giants. Rolle had eight tackles (six solo) in that game.

The previous year, Rolle switched from corner to safety and finished with a career-high 89 tackles (78 solo) and an interception that he returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

The Giants entered the offseason seeking help at safety. Their best player at the position, Kenny Phillips, missed the final 14 games of the 2009 season with an arthritic condition in his knee that required surgery. The Giants are hopeful Phillips will return at full strength, but the team's other safeties - Michael Johnson, Aaron Rouse and C.C. Brown - did not perform as well as the Giants had hoped.

In four seasons at the University of Miami, Rolle was credited with 183 tackles, five interceptions and also doubled as a return man, returning 13 punts in 2003 for 202 yards and one touchdown. He was also selected as Miami's ACC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and received his bachelor's degree in Sports Administration in May 2005.

After the Cardinals selected him with the eighth pick of the 2005 draft, Rolle was impressive in the first three games of his rookie season before suffering a left knee injury which required surgery and kept him on the sidelines for nine games. With his knee finally healthy, he came back and started all 16 games in 2006 and played in all 16 games (eight starts) in 2007 before switching to safety in 2008.

Rolle has missed only one game in the previous four seasons.

</intro>

    <intro>
I have to say I think my knee is way ahead of schedule. Everything is looking good, from what the doctors say, and I’ll be running by the end of the month. Then I’ll start picking up my rehab a little bit more.

Basically, I feel like I could play tomorrow if I had to. The trainers and doctors have done a real good job of getting me prepared. I miss the game, I can’t wait to get back into it.

Everybody is focused on the NFL Draft Combine right now. Some of those drills are necessary and some really aren’t when you’re playing the game. I mean, the shuttle and the broad jump, you don’t really need those drills. You can watch film to see how explosive a guy is. As far as the 40, some guys are just not that fast running 40 yards, but on the field they know how to get from Point A to Point B. I think the Combine can help guys that are trying to make a name for themselves, players from small schools and guys under the radar especially. If you’re already projected to go high, it can only hurt you.

When I was at the Combine I felt pretty good about it, it wasn’t that special. I did what I had to do, ran pretty well, lifted pretty well. I didn’t hurt myself in the draft. The best things there were meeting the other players and getting to sit down with the coaches from the different teams. That was pretty cool.

But I didn’t like the whole process, it was a very stressful time for me and my family. Everybody has something to say about you, positive or negative, and your family has to read about it every day. It was a very tough period for me.

My official time in the 40 was 4.48, but I really don’t think that means much. That one guy who’s there now, Joe Haden the D-back, everybody was raving about him coming into the Combine. Then he runs a 4.5 and now everybody is questioning whether he can play the game. He can play the game. He ran a slow 40 time, that doesn’t mean he is slow. He’s a playmaker. That 40 time could hurt him in the draft but I don’t think it should matter. I think film is way more important than anything that happens at the Combine.

In the end it worked out for the best for me. Everybody thinks they should have gone higher in the draft, but I’m happy where I landed. The Giants system is perfect for me and I’m extremely happy with where I am.

Kenny Phillips is a safety with the New York Giants. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.phillips21.com.

</intro>

    <intro>
Spike Lee made his movie "Do The Right Thing" in 1989.

Too often in sports, we focus on the athlete that does the wrong thing. The police blotter, a suspension for a drug policy violation, or a press conference for infidelity are the dominant stories in a society that loves to focus on the negative.

So it should come as no surprise that you have probably not heard about Eli Manning. I will state that I am not a Manning fan. Hey, I'm a Patriot fan, and Manning stood in the way of a perfect season for the 2007 Patriots. Add the constant struggle between the Patriots and Colts and I would probably be the farthest thing from a Manning fan.

Then I came across this story. Eli Manning provided some services for a Catholic hospital in Greenwich Village that is now facing massive debt (the Player Press news story is available here). Manning has waived the debt owed to him, and has promised to continue to provide services for the hospital without charging the hospital.

It wasn't a super human effort, it was simply the right thing to do. Sometimes, it is nice to simply acknowledge when the right thing happens.
</intro>

    <intro>
New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora says he will quit football entirely and retire before he will come back to the team as a backup this up coming season.

Umenyiora was benched late last season, and has publicly said that he won't stand for that treatment again.

"I'm not going to be a backup player, I can promise you that," Umenyiora said on Wednesday. "I'll stop playing football before I do that ever again. So for me it's not something that I'm going to do. If I'm asked to come back there and do that then I'll just stop playing football."

The Giants defensive end has the feeling that his time with the Giants may be up.

"I felt like I had worn out my welcome,” he said. “Because for certain people, no matter what happens, they'll never take them out of the lineup, you understand what I mean?"

On Wednesday, Giants General Manager Jerry Reese sat down with Umenyiora and talked with him about his concerns.

"They had a nice, long chat," Umenyiora's agent, Tony Agnone said. "And they'll continue to talk. They have a lot to discuss."

Neither Reese nor Umenyiora has disclosed exactly what was said during their little chat, but Umenyiora’s agent implied that his client still wants to play as a starter or not play at all.

If in fact that is really the circumstance, then there is good chance that Umenyiora will have to make the decision to not play. The Giants were not satisfied with how he played during the first 12 games, which is why they made him only a situational pass rusher and no longer a starter the following week.

However, if the Giants play hard ball, it would be safe to assume that Umenyiora would change his mind and play this season, backup or not. His contract will pay him $3.1 million this season and runs through 2012.

He might be upset right now, but it is doubtful that he will continue to be upset to the cost of close to $200,000 a week once the season starts, backup or otherwise.
</intro>

    <intro>
St. Vincent's hospital in New York is $700 million in debt and they also owed New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning over $500,000 for marketing work he has done for them.

However, Eli, knowing their debt problems, has told them that he wants them to keep their money, and that he will continue to do fundraising work for the hospital for no charge as well.

However, even though this is a wonderful gesture, especially for someone that is already a millionaire such as Eli Manning, the bad publicity in New York has outdone the good deed.

The reason for the bad publicity in this matter is the fact that Manning has already made over $500,000 from them for previous work. And because of this, radio stations and newspapers, and the people of New York are blasting Manning. They are saying that he should give it all back.

Emails to the New York Post are saying that this why the hospital is going down to begin with, and that Eli should return all of the money and to dedicate himself to saving a hospital that is in such dire need. They go as far as to call Manning a “shlump!"

How do you know that Manning was not aware of the hospital's severe debt issues when he originally took the money to begin with. I mean after all, he had a marketing deal with the hospital and they agreed to pay him for his work. It is not like he held them for ransom and demanded his money or else.

I would bet that there are a lot of professional athletes out there that would demand the money. Eli should be commended for this and what he did was a great thing and he did what he felt was right.

    <intro>
New York Giants starting left tackle Dave Diehl will represent the Giants and the NFC in the Pro Bowl in Miami on Jan. 31.

It is the first Pro Bowl selection for Diehl, who was originally named first alternate and will replace Jon Stinchcomb, whose Saints will play in the Super Bowl the following Sunday.

Bryant McKinnie of the Vikings and Jason Peters of the Eagles are the other tackles on the NFC Pro Bowl team.

Diehl currently has an Ironman streak of playing – and starting – in every NFL game since he was drafted in the 5th round in 2003 out of Illinois. Diehl has played in 112 career games, with 112 career starts and 0 games missed.

Diehl is the only player drafted in 2003 to have started every NFL game since. Heading into his seventh season, the Chicago-area native had never even missed a practice prior to this preseason.

The 6-5, 320-pound workaholic came into this season with a streak of 96 straight starts.

The versatile lineman became the first Giant since the introduction of the 16-game schedule in 1978 to start all 96 regular season games in his first six seasons. He played right guard, right tackle and left guard before settling in last season at left tackle for the Giants.
</intro>

    <intro>
New York Giants co-owner John Mara stated that the record of 8-8 that the team had this season felt more like 2-14 then it did a .500 record.

On Monday Mara criticized his team after they ended the season with a second straight loss, and embarrassing losses at that. Mara said he was disappointed and unhappy with everyone involved in the organization after the Giants, who started the season at 5-0, but then when on and lost eight of their final 11 games this season.

Mara promised changes, but also stated that head coach Tom Coughlin nor general manager Jerry Reese would be fired and be part of those changes.

However, there are definitely some coaches and players whose jobs are in jeopardy. Mara stated that he was angry at the lack of mental and physical toughness as the season moved along and the lack of effort in the last two weeks, where the Giants lost 41-9 in their final game in Giants Stadium, and a 44-7 defeat in Minnesota against the Vikings to end the season.

What actual changes that may happen are up in the air at this point, but change is definitely in the air at Giants headquarters these days. The Giants were expected to compete for the divisional title and were one of the preseason favorites to win the NFC and advance to the Super Bowl.

After starting the season 5-0, expectations rose even further, but from that point on, the Giants just did not seem to be in sync and could not get it together. You can tell from Mara’s comments that there will be some new faces on both the coaching staff, the front office, and on the playing field when training camp rolls around next July.

</intro>

    <intro>
This was not what we had in mind. This was not how we wanted our last memory of Giants Stadium to go down. It was a tough loss for everyone, the players and the fans.

We were just out of sync in all phases of the game against a Carolina team that was playing very well. Don’t take anything away from Carolina, they played a great game. But we didn’t play nearly as well as we’re capable of playing. We made simple mistakes, missed tackles and penalties hurt us. Good teams expose those problems.

No way we should have gone out like that in front of our home fans. Nobody gave up. This isn’t a group of guys that is going to lay down. Point blank, Carolina was the better team that day. But that’s not the way we wanted to finish our home season, our last game at the old Giants Stadium.

This is the last year of my contract but I haven’t given any thought to where I’m going to play next year. We’ve got one game left, against the Vikings. We want to get that win and get to 9-7. This is a good group of guys, we want to go out playing good football. We’re not going to the playoffs but we want to end on a good note and finish strong.

We were inconsistent all year. We had talent. That’s the hardest thing to swallow.

One other thing I want to mention is that my wife’s new company Off The Market held its first event this past weekend at Taj on <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address style="background-position: left bottom; background-image: url(res://ietag.dll/#34/#1001); background-repeat: repeat-x;" tabindex="0" w:st="on">21st Street</st1:address></st1:street> in New York. A lot of teammates came out to support us and it was a great time. Check out http://www.offthemarketevents.com/.

Fred Robbins is a defensive tackle with the New York Giants. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.fredrobbins98.com.

    <intro>
After playing only a handful of snaps, star DE Osi Umenyiora revealed his frustrations after the Giants lost 41-9 to

Osi Umenyiora

the Panthers on Sunday. Will the two-time Pro Bowler and Strahan apprentice remain a New York Giant?

"I couldn't really explain what I'm feeling right now, disappointment is an understatement," Umenyiora told reporters. "In everything, the way everything has played out this year has been absolute nonsense, very disappointed, disheartened, discouraged, whatever you want to call it."

The team started the season 5-0 before unraveling and missing the playoffs. Umenyiora has not started the past four games.

Umenyiora said it was "unbelievable" to him that the Giants would play so poorly in their final game at Giants Stadium.

"I don't know, man. What did I play, five snaps today? I don't know, I don't know what happened. I thought I was the problem. It's an unbelievable situation, man. Last game at Giants Stadium, probably as a Giant, just the way everything has unfolded has been unbelievable. I never would have dreamt this in a million years, but it is what it is, we live and we learn."

For the season, he is second only to Justin Tuck in sacks (6 to Tuck's 7) and is tied with Bryan Kehl to lead the team with two fumble recoveries. Osi missed all of last season with an injury to his left knee. He returned this season about twenty pounds lighter. According to Owner's Edge, Umenyiora had several arguments with the new Defensive Coordinator, Bill Sheridan, in late August. Sheridan replaced Steve Spagnulo, who took the head coaching job for the St. Louis Rams, who currently hold the worst record in the NFL.

Umenyiora walked out of practice on August 31st. He issued an apology for skipping the Monday practice with the Giants, according to Newsday. He said, "I made a mistake by leaving the facility today. I was wrong. I came in here this afternoon and met with coach Coughlin, coach Sheridan and coach Waufle and apologized and explained why I left the building; that will remain between us. I have no problem with our defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan or any of our coaches. That is the end of it, as far as I am concerned."

But that may not have been the end of it. Just two years after a 13-sack season, Umenyiora was demoted from starting defensive end to a pass rush specialist. The defense may have had a difficulty with it pass rush late in the season because Osi was not in for every play.

The defense, however, has problems with a weak secondary and an off-and-on rush defense as well. The Giants had played 282 previous games at Giants Stadium, but never had they given up more rushing yards to an opponent than they did to Carolina’s Jonathan Stewart in Sunday’s stadium finale. The entire defense reflected feelings of frustration after the game. Osi concluded his thoughts with the press yesterday feeling like he'd had enough.

*Coughlin & Co. have a lot to think about this offseason.

"I can't even sit here and answer any more questions. I'm about to say something that would get me really messed up, so I'm just going to leave now. You guys have a good day."

It seems like either defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan (and maybe for good measure, defensive line coach Mike Waufle, too) must go, or else Osi will.

    <intro>

    Before we begin, I think I can officially be labeled a Jinx. I predicted, the Cowboys would lose to the Saints and good-bye perfect season for the Saints. Two years ago I predicted the Giants would go 16 - 0. They promptly got flattened in their first two games. (Remember the Defense gave up 80 pts to the 'Boys and the Pack). Ironically, they lost their last regular season game to the team that actually did go 16 - 0. I will not mention their name. They're a bunch of cheaters. Not to worry, Giants faithful. I'm always right (unless I'm wrong). Onto the preview....

THE ANALYSIS:

    The Saints, Raiders and Steelers have proven without a doubt, that any team can win on any given sunday. So while the Redskins are actually playing a little better than the Giants (I blame the defensive coordinator), this will have little bearing on tonight's game. I will not mention that the G-men have lost 6 of 8 or that the 'Skins have been playing lights out, the past 5 weeks.

        Giants D vs Redskins' offense: I know people. I'm scared too. Santana Moss is a Burner and the Giants' best corner (Webster) is out. In fact their entire secondary is banged up (Webster, Kenny Phillips, Aaron Ross). Question: is the Giants' secondary ever not banged up? The good news is, Aaron Ross will finally be playing cornerback (you know, the position he was actually drafted to play). Please note, I'm conveniently ignoring that Ross's bothersome hamstring flared up again this week. The Giants' pass rush is now more of a pass pedestrian, but at least they're shutting down the run (just 122 yds allowed, past 2 weeks). If the Giants can at least shut down the run again, at least that'll force Campbell to win on his own.

      Giants offense vs. Redskins D: Let me mention what no one else has noticed. the Giants run is 'struggling' because teams still play to stop the run. You CANNOT stop Jacobs with only 6 or 7 in the box. He's been running against 8+ man fronts all year. If you really pay attention between a typical run last year and this year, you'll notice the offensive line is blocking more defenders than they had to last year. The reason is simple: Burress is not around. The Giants current recievers have stepped up admirably, but they do not generate the fear and respect that Buress did. It's that simple. As for tonight, I'm still not sold on the Redskins Defense. They gave up 60 points to New Orleans and Philly combined and then gave up 13 to the offensively challenged Raiders. Wow. Impressive. Eli's been on fire, Smith is one of the top recievers in the NFC, and the two young 'uns (Manningham and Nicks) are legit deep threats. The Giants won't destroy the 'skins on the ground but that's fine. They can do it in the air.

     Special teams: Now this is the area that worries me the most. The Giants kicking, and punting situation is struggling. On their kickoffs, the ball never reaches the goal line, and rarely even reaches the 5. Feagles is a great directional punter, but there's no power in his leg. it's inexplicable how he punts right at the returner giving them opportnities to return his punts. Disclaimer: I know nothing about the Redskins' special teams. This is why I haven't mentioned them. Uh oh. I hope I didn't just reverse Jinx their unit into returning 3 touchdowns against us. Whoa, just ducked a lightning bolt. Let's just move on....

Things that will happen in this game:  Eli will throw for at least 250 yards (He always plays better on the road in december, why haven't more people noticed?); Campbell will miss a wide open reciever by at least 2 miles (he does this everytime he plays the Giants); Santana Moss will burn our secondary....  repeatedly (Their best cover corner is out, and Ross is hobbled, I'm gonna run out and get some pepto);

Things that will not happen in this game: Either team will sustain a any kind of a run game (Giants' run game is struggling, 'Skins run is going up against a stout run defense); Jacobs will run over somebody (He may not gain 100, but he loves running over those redskins); The Giants recievers learn to catch (uuhhh have you seen the drops lately? I had less drops playing in the rain.... while I was drunk);

And the prediciton is: This ain't yo grand daddy's NFC East battle. This one looks like it'll be a shoot out. Good offense vs. an average defense? Average offense vs. a terrible defense(coordinator)? There will be points aplenty.

Giants win 38 -35.

    <intro>

    For those who disagree with the title, let's review: The Cowboys will win one more game, two if they're lucky. If they finish tied with the Giants, the Giants own all the tie breakers over them. The only other playoff contender in the entire conference is the Packers. Giants remaining opponents are: Redskins, Panthers and Vikes. The Cowboys remaining three are: Saints, 'Skins and Eagles (that sound you just heard was Cowboys fans punching a hole through their PC's). There's a more than decent chance that the Giants and Cowboys finish the season tied. (mind you, I am writing this post before the 'Boys take on the Saints tonight; If the Cowboys pull off a miracle and beat the Saints I will wash my face with acid... then pour alcohol on it to treat the wound). Who knows, maybe the Giants run the table and the Cowboys lose 2 of 3. That's entirely possible given their remaining schedules. So you've heard it here first. Giants are making the playoffs!

     Now they're many people, more sane than myself, who whine: Why should we hope to make the playoffs?The defense can't stop anyone! Now this may be true. But allow me to put your glass-half-empty minds at ease. First step, is the reality that when (not if) the Giants make the playoffs, they will face the Eagles. Face it, the number 1 and number 2 seeds are going to the Saints and Vikes. Barring a colossal collapse by the Eagles they will be in at number 3. The Packers pretty much own the first wild card (They're last 3 games: Steelers, 'Hawks and Cards). So the Giants are more likely making it as the 2nd Wild card. Pop Quiz boys and girls: Which seed does the 2nd wild card play in the 1st round? That's right the number 3 seed! This will all make sense 3 weeks from now when every columnist in the country breaks down the unlimited wat-if scenarios. Ignore them all and just listen to me: Giants, Eagles,1st round at Licncoln financial.

And on a totally unrelated topic: I keep having these recurring nightmares. I'm sleeping on a nice comfortable bed. Suddenly, my bedroom door bursts open. Some maniac in an Eagles jersey runs up and jumps on my bed, wielding a chainsaw and a hockey mask. The number "10" is sewn into the front of his jersey.I just can't figure out the significance. Just another topic to inform my therapist about.

So the Giants play the Eagles in the 1st round. Here's my take:

REASONS TO WORRY:

The defense. That's pretty much it. This team has the same personnel that terrorized opposing offenses (especially QB's) two short years ago. The only significant change was the coordinator. Now this unit can't stop anyone. If the personnel is the same, the results are different, and the coordinator's different - I think the problem is obvious. Especially when you see defensive linemen (you know the guys that are paid to chase qb's) chasing recievers and tight ends. That's a problem.

     Another problem is the punting situation. Feagles is having a HORRIBLE year. I'm shocked no one has seen this. A punter has 3 goals: boom the ball as far as humanely possible, boom the ball as high as possible (giving the coverage teams time to reach the returner before the ball does), or punt it out of bounds. In the Eagle game, Feagles did niether.He kicked a line drive punt right at the returner. Who happened to be Desean Jackson. Who happened to return the last punt for a touchdown. That's like throwing a softball to Pujols. Here you go. Just go 'head and score. Take my manhood while you're at it.

REASONS TO NOT WORRY:

The offense; Manning; The fact that Sheridan can't possibly allow his defense to get annhilated 3 times to the same team. Another thing that hasn't been mentioned enough: Have you seen Eli lately? The guy threw for a career high in a cold weather game (throwing out once and for all that wacked out theory that he hates the cold). The young recievers are good, but there has been more than a few dropped TD passes. He has cut down on his mistakes (just 2 picks in his last 3 games), is one shy of his career high in TD passes with 3 games to play and plays at his best when the Giants back is to the wall. Uuuuhhh I'd say the Giants back is to the wall right about now. Let's not discredit the running game. Maligned all year, this unit is now up to 4.3 yards per rush in the last 2 games.

     As for Sheridan, fear not. He has over a month to grasp such basic tidbits like: When a reciever is shredding you, try doubling him instead of relying on zones; Aaron Ross was drafted as a corner, try playing him there; Kiwanuka, Osi, Tuck are defensive ends, have them chase qb's not recievers. I think I'm starting to see why Osi stormed out of a meeting earlier this year. Like I said, he's seen this Eagles team (and everyone else) put up points aplenty on his defense many times.Maybe he has it figured out now. I swear this is not a jinx

So there you have it. I have shown you the light. The Giants will make the playoffs and they will beat the Eagles in the first round (to many scenarios to predict a possible 2nd round opponent). Meanwhile Saints, 'Boys are underway. I think I'll go grab a bottle of Acid. Just in case.

    <intro>
We played hard against the Eagles, but we made some mistakes and a good team will always capitalize when you make mistakes. Playing against a guy like Donovan McNabb, you know he’s going to find some weakness or hole in the defense and make the most of it.

The defense did not play well, we had some spurts during the game where we played well but we were not consistent enough. And that’s not good enough when you’re playing a team like the Eagles for the division lead, you have to play well all four quarters.

We have to eliminate those quick strikes, the 60-yard passes, the long runs. We have to make them earn every yard and we didn’t do that. We had some breakdowns, up front and in the secondary. We just didn’t play well.

There’s still a light at the end of the tunnel. But we can’t count on anyone else, we have to go out and win these last three games to get into the playoffs.

This week we play Monday Night Football against the Redskins. Another hard game against another division rival. There’s a lot on the line, this is a win we gotta have if we want a chance to get into the playoffs.

We know it’s not going to be easy. Washington is playing good right now. They always play us tough, especially at home. We can’t take them lightly, they’re going to come out and give us their best shot. They’re playing everyone tough, they beat Dallas, should’ve beat the Saints.

Now it’s down to us. We have to go out on the road and get us a win and try to seal the deal by winning out.

Fred Robbins is a defensive tackle with the New York Giants. <intro>
The Philadelphia Eagles are coming into Giants Stadium for Sunday Night Football and this game is huge. We’re fighting for the lead in the division, we need this win and they need this win.

Just like any game against a division rival, you know it’s going to be a smashmouth, physical game from the get-go. But the Giants vs. Eagles rivalry brings more intensity than any other game on our schedule.

We’re coming off the win against the Cowboys, a game when we went out there with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, a lot of heart, guys sold out for one another. We played well in all phases, offense, defense and special teams, and we all used the energy from one another to win the game. When Hixon returned that punt for a touchdown, the entire team was off the bench and on their feet, cheering him on.

That’s how you win games, with energy, passion and enthusiasm. You not only have to play well but you have to have that confidence in each other. That’s what the Cowboys game showed us. Everybody took accountability for themselves, everybody was fighting for each other and selling out on every play out there.

This week we need to play even better and play with more fire and determination to get this win because we’ve got a hungry Philly team coming in and they want to win the division just like we do.

I’ll be going up against Trent Cole for most of the game. He’s good and fast and plays with a lot of heart. He has 9½ sacks coming in and he’s the leader of that defense, the guys rally around him and feed off his intensity and the way he plays the game. I know I have to do everything in my power physically to make sure I’m ready to go. I have to bring my best game to go up against their best player, which means extra time in the film room, weight room, and extra field stuff so I can play with the utmost confidence and make sure I’ve done everything I can to make Eli comfortable in the pocket. Cole is a guy you have to finish, go hard against every single play because he never gives up on a play.

One more thing: This is the last time the Giants will play the Eagles in Giants Stadium. The Giants tradition goes back long before I got here and it means a lot to every one on this team and in this organization. We always talk about how important it is to play for a good franchise in a great place. We not only owe it to the fans who have come to Giants Stadium and supported us, but also to our staff, the Mara family and Tisch family, and to ourselves to walk out of Giants Stadium knowing that when we played here as our home, it was a homefield advantage for us.

Dave Diehl is an offensive lineman for the New York Giants. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.davediehl66.com.

</intro>

    <intro>
We got a much-needed win against a good Cowboys team and we got a little swagger back. We played well in all three phases, offense, defense and special teams and that’s a good sign for us. We got back to playing Giants football, now we just have to keep this push going til the end of the regular season.

We were able to shut down the run and make the Cowboys one-dimensional. Anytime you can do that it gives you a chance to make some plays. We got good pressure on Romo, got a couple sacks, hit him a couple times and forced him to make some bad throws. We made plays when we needed to, forced a couple of turnovers and didn’t have many penalties. We limited their opportunities and took advantage of our own.

It’s hard to lose a game when you don’t make mistakes and play solid football in all three phases. That’s what it’s going to take to win in the month of December. We have to keep honing the things we do well.

The Eagles are another big game for us, another team playing well, another division rival. You can throw out the records when we play Philly, especially this time of year. Again we have to play good sound football, can’t make critical errors, have to force turnovers and play well in all three phases.

It’s always a big game for us against the Eagles, you have the whole New York-Philly rivalry and the fans play it up. There’s always bad blood between us. McNabb always wants to play his best game against us and a lot of these games come down to a field goal, who has the ball last. That’s what the game is all about.

They don’t have Westbrook but they still have lots of other weapons. Good backs, playmaking receivers and Michael Vick comes in as a changeup. McNabb has great presence in the pocket, he’s a great quarterback who can feel the pressure and throw from the pocket or on the run. We’re going to have to concentrate on fundamentals and bottle him up if we’re going to shut them down.

Fred Robbins is a starting defensive tackle for the New York Giants. His blog for www.playerpress.com runs at www.fredrobbins98.com.

</intro>

    <intro>
If the Giants do nothing else with this season, at least they'll have the glory of defeating Dallas.

Um... I'd like to start this column with an eloquent and mature "HELL YEAH!"

With the season on the line, the Giants regrouped and pulled out a win. Big Blue used elements of the game that have been missing for far too long: big plays, special teams living up to their name, pressure on the quarterback, and a lack of unnecessary penalties.

The Giants truly dominated on was rush defense. Marion Barber was celebratory dancing after every yard early in the game, but he cursed himself. Barber ended the game with 36 of the team's 45 rushing yards.

Of course, no Giants win should come without nail-biting cardiac arrest. The Giants lost a fumble, threw a pick, gave Witten a record game, and let the Cowboys convert easily on 3rd and 14.

More frustrating than worrying that the Giants will give up a late touchdown to allow the game to come down to an onside kick, which they did, was the television coverage of the game. Fox Sports is terrible.

Dallas attempted a 57-yard field goal right before halftime. The kick was short, of course, but there was action after the play. Flozell Adams decided to shove Justin Tuck in the back for no apparent reason. Well, probably from 'roid rage, rivalry ruckus, a new trend for the Cowboys to have one cheap shot on Tuck per game, and/or some spontaneous need for a penalty and fine. Commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman simply stated, "a fight has broken out on the side of the field," before cutting to commercial, followed by the halftime show. How dare Fox Sports not show us a fight? Just because football isn't hockey and fighting is not-so encouraged doesn't mean that the viewers don't deserve to see the aggression. Boo on you, Fox. That's another point for being at the game.

At some point, one of the two terrible men I had to listen to because the Giants are an NFC team said that the Giants have a lot of questions to answer about their "leadership and heart." First of all, that kind of comment is so cliché and cheesy that it should hurt to say. Second of all, it's wrong. Underachieving teams like the New York Giants need to question their talent and discipline. Let's not pretend this is Tim Tebow's appeal to God. Jesus, Mary and Joseph have no place on the field... well, I guess Mary. Hail Mary. Jesus can't be on the football field. He definitely wouldn't be able to runt he crossing route. Okay, that was bad.Even by my standards, which are pretty low.

The point is that the NFL is not about a group of people coming together learning life lessons and winning through soul. That's a Lifetime movie. Football is about beating the crap out of the other team. Hopefully, the Giants will keep the ship steered in the right direction next week when they face another division foe at home with the season on the line.

    <intro>
I don’t have any idea what the difference is between this Giants defense and the one that won the Super Bowl and led us into the playoffs last year. I’m more like a fan now watching from home while I rehab my knee. It’s really frustrating, especially the way we’re playing right now, I can’t even watch the games sometimes.

I know this is a good team, I know how hard these guys work and how much they want to win, but for some reason it’s not showing and that’s the most frustrating thing. Sometimes I have to change the channel.

I actually think we can get out of it. I don’t see anyone out there quitting, you can tell they want to win and are out there playing. Somehow it just all has to come together. As long as no one is quitting, you still have a chance.

We do have a lot of guys injured or coming off injuries but that’s no excuse. With the guys we have we are good enough to win games. The whole thing went downhill and you just can’t call out one person. Collectively, as a team, the offense, defense and special teams have to get in sync.

A lot of people are blaming Coach Sheridan. I don’t want to say that losing Coach Spags was a big difference, but some things are going to change when you change coordinators. Coach Sheridan did his best to keep things simple and keep things the same so there shouldn’t have been a big dropoff.

It’s just hard to put a finger on it. But you know how it is, when something goes down somebody has to take the blame. Guys on the team are not pointing fingers but the media and the fans want to know who is responsible. If you’re not a tight group to start out with you can fall apart, but I haven’t seen that from what I’ve seen and who I’ve talked to.

As far as my rehab goes I’m down in Miami, walking around, starting to walk on a treadmill, do some light mini-squats, leg presses, nothing major. I had a checkup last month with Dr. Andrews in Alabama and he said the knee looks great and everything is on schedule. I picked up my rehab a little bit but I don’t want to overdo it. All I can do right now is wait until the knee is good enough so I can get back out there and start running around.

We’re still in the wild card hunt, and hopefully we’ll win out. It’s going to be hard, and people probably don’t believe we can do it, but you never know. No one on this team has given up. I know the hard work and effort these guys put in. I hate to see us lose.

Kenny Phillips is a safety with the New York Giants. <intro>
       I do believe we Giants fans have become a little spoiled. Everywhere I look, I see Giants fans, complaining, whining and curling into a fetal position crying hysterically (OK that last one was what I did after the Denver Debacle; sorry couldn't help it).

But things aren't as bad as they may seem. Just think, we could've been saddled with the Rams or the Bucs. Or maybe even 'gasp' the Lions, who haven't had a winning season since Paris Hilton was still a virgin. We could've been like the defending champs who had to trot out a 3rd stringer for a crucial game against a division rival last sunday. But we're not any of those things. We're a respectable 6 - 5, with a decent chance at the playoffs. So, in true Irrational fashion, I'll run down 11 things that we Giants fans should be thankful for. Why eleven? Because ten is boring. And so, in no particular order, without further ado:

# 11 - Giants have the number 5 defense in the NFL

That's right. Despite the defense sustaining more injuries than the New Jersey Nets, they still boast an elite unit.

# 10 - They have nealry the same team that won SB XL!!

Same D line, Same O-line, Same RB, QB, and coach. Did they lose some key personnel? Of course. But they've kept just about 90% of the team intact.

# 9 - Giants have NOT played their best football and they're still 6 - 5

Think about it: Does anyone really believe that New Orleans, San Diego, or Arizona can hold a candle to the Giants when they're at their best? Anone?? Remember this is the same team that destroyed their first 5 opponents when their defense was still not intact

# 8 - Their defense is nearly intact

Canty's back, Boley's back, Ross is back. Osi's starting to show his '07 form (keep in mind I'm writing this as if the Denver Debacle never happened; please bear with me)

# 7 - Their young receivers have stepped up

Ironically the running game has Giants fans more worried. Our passing game features the number 5 reciever in the league (Smith) and two legit deep threats (Nicks and Manningham). Buress who?

# 6 - Their core players are still young.

Most of the Giants' skill players are either entering their prime or they're already in their prime. Eli's still 28, they have a plethora of young recievers. Their top two running backs are 27 or younger. I haven't even begun with the defense. Go 'head take a look. Click on roster. See? They're you go.

# 5 - They have on of the best Gm/owner/coaching combos in the league

The Giants are family owned. Jerry Reese is one of the best in the business. And if you don't know who Tom Coughlin is by now, then you need to pay your electric bill. If you don't think having a competent Owner/GM/Coach is important in the NFL (or for that matter in ANY sport) just remember these names: Matt Millen, Isiah Thomas, Daniel Snyder...... I arrest my case

# 4 - They're getting a new stadium

C'mon that's worth at least an extra 2 or 3 wins next year. The over-rated cowboys got a new stadium and their somehow 8 -3. The Yankees got a new stadium and we all know how their season ended. I'm sensing a trend here.

# 3 - They make the playoffs every year

You'd rather cheer for a playoff team. Admit it. Even if they don't go all the way, it's better than cheering for a lottery team every season (mind you, I'm a Knicks fan). The Giants have made the playoffs 4 straight years and have at least 2 more with this core. If Eli's foot heals and the D-line remembers where the opposing QB is, a few more SB runs isn't out of the question

# 2 - No controveries

All around the league, teams are either struggling with bad records, controversial players, players getting benched or crippling injuries. In some cases all four. The Giants have none of these issues. They just need to play better. And they'll have 9 days of rest before they destroy the Cowboys (whoops, that last quote was meant for my Giants-Cowboys preview).

And the number one reason to be thankful that you're a Giants fan - They have nice uniforms

You've seen the awful throwbacks. You've seen the confusing name changes (did you catch Titans vs Titans in week 3?). You may have been tempted to rub your eyes with sand paper. At least that's what I thought watching some of these games with "throwback" unis. Uuuuhhh they call 'em "Throwbacks" for a reason. Why recycle them? The Giants? They've maintained virtually the same Uniforms, name and City for their entire history. And luckily for us viewers, thier uniforms don't look as if a whale threw up on it (throwback Bucs anyone?).

And so there you have it Giants fans. We're truly a lucky bunch. I hope this holiday post made you feel better about the team, and this season. If it didn't, well I suggest a lovely concoction called whiskey. Straight. With no chaser. Stay tuned for my Giants - Cowboys preview. And remember: My predictions are all biased and Irrational. Genius, signing out.
</intro>

    <intro>
I'm writing a complaint letter to Wachovia. I will have no more of this "play of the game" decided with two minutes left when the game is still in the process of being blown. Plus, the play of the game was not the Boss TD that was played on the jumbotron, it was the coin toss that gave the Giants the ball first in OT.

An ugly win is still a win, but that eyesore can damage the retinas. Anyone who watched the entire Week 11 game knows that their eyes do not deceive them, the Giants looked like a mistake-prone team with a soft defense that can't protect a lead.

But thanks to the struggling Atlanta Falcons who also did not want to play well, the New York football Giants finally got their first win in six weeks.

Eli made two mistakes early. He fumbled and threw an interception in the first drive.

But the errors for Manning ended there. The offense pulled it together nicely. Tight End Kevin Boss had a great day, averaging over 15-yards per play with 2TD catches.

But he wasn't the only man open. Eli passed the ball around on a day where Plaxico Burress was not missed. Retired team leader Michael Strahan and former Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo were the pieces of the Superbowl 42 championship team that fans longed for as the once tough defense that would certainly be able to protect a two-touchdown lead in the 4th quarter.

As well as the offense got it together, there were still field goals attempts from the Red Zone where touchdowns should be occurring.

Why does Heinz sponsor the Red Zone at Giants Stadium? There is no other ketchup, really. Heinz dominates the popular condiment and is the largest provider. I think that the someone else should jump on the sponsorship opportunity there. Perhaps it could be the Big Red "Chew It Out" Zone, the N.R.A. "Out for Blood" Zone, or the Red Roof "Get it Inn" Zone.

One Giants Red Zone visit stalled at 13-yd line where kicker Lawrence Tynes proceeded to miss a 31-yd field goal attempt. As unacceptable as this is, Jason Elam of the Falcons was drinking from the same fountain and missed a 35-yd attempt three drives later. Those botched "gimme" field goals cancelled each other out, but that, like winning the coin toss for possession in overtime, was lucky.

The Giants have little time to thank their lucky coin. In a short "week" of four days, Big Blue will be in Denver for a game of two teams that are not as impressive as they appeared earlier in the season.
</intro>
